Helen Mehmert Bauman
March 29, 1922 - October 23, 2024

Helen Mehmert Bauman was born to Herman and Nellie English Jenner in Olney, Illinois on March 29, 1922, and passed away on October 23, 2024, at 102 years of age. Helen was beloved as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and loyal friend. Helen met and married Dr. Henry Mehmert of Chicago in 1943, who paused his medical practice to serve as Chief of Surgery at Eglin AFB in Florida during WWII. They moved to Greenville in 1946, where Dr. Mehmert practiced internal medicine until his death in 1987.
Helen wore many hats in the intervening years as a super volunteer for anything and everything that involved her children Cecelia (Ceil) born in 1944 and Michael born in 1947 and her husband's practice. She served as a girl scout leader, cub scout den mother, PTA president, Pink Ladies, a member of the Hunt County Medical Auxiliary. Helen was an active member of St. Williams Catholic Church.
Helen especially enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends and family well into her nineties. She particularly enjoyed traveling many national parks and much of the USA, plus New Zealand, Holland, Italy, France and Germany. She had a genuine zest for living.
After the death of Dr. Mehmert, Helen returned to Olney for a reunion and renewed a friendship with Jack Bauman, a childhood friend from the 1930's. Marriage eventually took place. Helen had played tennis since her teens and Jack was an avid golfer so they spent the next16 years traveling, entertaining, dancing, and enjoying life-long friends until Jack's untimely death in 2005. Many times Helen expressed the intense pleasure of having acquired an extended family through each new chapter in life. She became mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to all of them.
Helen is survived by her daughter Ceil Langford and husband Lanny, daughter-in-law Laura Mehmert (widow of Helen's son Mike who passed away one year ago this month), Jan Bauman York, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service was celebrated on October 28, 2024, at Memoryland Memorial Park with Deacon Lee Davis officiating. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.
