Linda Kay Thornton, 79, of Greenville, Texas, passed away with family by her side on
August 17, 2026.
Linda was born January 6, 1947, in Houston, Texas, to Leroy Schultz and Mary Hegwood. As a child and young woman she grew up exhibiting her loving nature and patience as a nurturer to her two sisters, Sharon and Pam. Moving from place to place didn't leave much room for many friends, so she found a love for reading. When she moved to Louisiana as a young teen she found the love of her life. And even though at first she couldn't stand him, she married David Thornton on April 29, 1967, in Beaumont, Texas. And together they started a journey and lived a life most can only dream of.
As a wife, mother and homemaker she always only expressed love and kindness. She handled life with a quiet strength. She found joy in every moment, thankfulness with every struggle, and spoke of the silver lining in every hardship.
She and David built 2 houses with their own two hands, fulfilling dreams in life and traveling all over the country. She had three children, who she loved wholeheartedly. She passed down her nurturing love and strength to all three. Teaching them to look on the bright side even when it's dark. To stop and look around at the beauty of life. To think for yourself above following the crowd. And remember to pray.
Anyone who has ever met Linda will say she was the sweetest, most patient person you'll ever meet. All her family will say she was one of the strongest women they know. And that there was a wild side she kept hidden well. From reading and crocheting to street racing and taking a stand for her children, she took life by the horns and lived it how she wanted.
Linda's memory will live on and her love, faith and heart will carry on through the generations.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 24, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the chapel of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home with Mr. Matt Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Linda is survived by her son, Robert Thornton and wife, Jennifer; daughters, Chrissy DeLand and husband, Jeremy, Alecia Thompson and husband, Matt; 18 grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters.
Pallbearers will be Robert Thornton, Matt Thompson, Josh Thompson, Jeremy DeLand and Scott Thornton.
