James graduated from Wolfe City High School in 1945. He then enlisted in the US Army on April 14, 1946, and was honorably discharged on September 21, 1947. He served as a T/5 Surgical Technician in the Philippines. Following his military service, James went to work for Sears, Roebuck and Company and retired in 1985 after 35 years - starting as a delivery driver, then salesman, catalog sales manager, auto service manager, and eventually store manager. James was a member of Highland Terrace Baptist Church of Greenville and in previous years was active in Park Street Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and served on various committees, including the Buildings and Grounds Committee. After retirement, James was a member of the Golden Kiwanis where he served as Lieutenant Governor for the Texas-Oklahoma District. He and his wife, Betty, enjoyed traveling in their travel trailer and were proud to have visited all 50 states.
James is survived by sons Neil Roddy and Jim Roddy (Jo) and grandchildren Brent Roddy, Eric Roddy (Keeton), Leslie Clancy (Shawn), Stacy McCarthy (Russell) and Casey Starr (Stephen) as well as seven great-grandchildren - Cole Roddy, Emma Roddy, Karson Clancy, Madelyn McCarthy, Jett Starr, Aaron McCarthy, Amelia Starr.
James was preceded in death his wife Betty Roddy, his parents Robert and Bessie Roddy, sisters Kathryn Roddy, Helen Gatlin and Theda Harrell, and brother Bill Roddy.
The family would like to thank the Countryside Senior Living staff and Centric Hospice Care, especially Sheila Shaw, for the excellent care they provided James during his last years.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City, Texas with Mr. Mike Middlebrooks officiating. Coker-Mathews Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Family and friends are welcome to attend.
