James Lewis was born August 1, 1941, in Greenville, Texas, and departed this life peacefully on May 7, 2026. His life was enriched by his roles as a devoted son, loving big brother and uncle, cherished husband and father, proud grandfather, decorated veteran, gifted pilot, accomplished businessman, and trusted advisor.
J.L. was a proud graduate and valedictorian of Boles Home High School, an early reflection of the determination, leadership, and work ethic that guided him throughout his life. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas before pursuing his true passion: aviation.
He served his country honorably as a Captain in the United States Air Force, piloting B-52 bombers. At the time, he was the youngest Aircraft Commander in SAC (Strategic Air Command). His military service was decorated and a testament to his commitment to something greater than himself. During his service, he married the love of his life, Cecelia (Teya) Hodge, and together they embraced a season of great joy and adventure. Even after his military career, J.L. enjoyed countless flights with his family and continued studying every aspect of aviation.
Following his Air Force service, J.L. and Teya returned to Greenville, Texas, where he launched J.L. Green Insurance Agency. During his remarkable insurance career, he earned a reputation as a trusted and respected advisor, known not only for his business acumen but also for his wisdom, which clients often sought outside of business matters.
J.L. was an active member of his community, elected as a member and President of the Greenville ISD School Board and the Greenville Rotary Club. He was a devoted land steward and cherished time working with his family in his father's Quinlan Lumber Company, as well as on cattle and farm operations.
Above all, J.L. will be remembered as a principled, disciplined, and hardworking man. He loved to tell stories and tinker with his tractors and classic cars. He carried himself with kindness and humility, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. His legacy is one of integrity, service, and unwavering love and commitment to his wife and family.
J.L. was preceded in death by his father, James Lewis Green Sr.; mother, Billie Faye Smith Green; brother, Larry Wayne Green; and stepmother, Nell Green.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Cecelia (Teya) Hodge Green; daughters Kathryn Green-Holmes and her husband Fred Holmes IV of Rowlett, Texas, and Heather Green Talbot and her husband George Byron Talbot III of Fairhope, Alabama; proud grandchildren George Downie Talbot and Cecelia Anne Talbot of Fairhope, Alabama, and Teya Kate Holmes and Helen Tess Holmes of Rowlett, Texas; brother Ronnie Marvin Green and his wife Elizabeth Green of Greenville, Texas; sister-in-law Frances Green of Greenville, Texas, sister-in-law Dianne Cooner of Richmond, Texas, step-brother Paul Kramer and his wife Debby of Carrollton, Texas; step-sister Nancy Wussow of Plano, Texas, aunt Edna Jean Smith of Greenville, Texas and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who brought him joy and fellowship. Though our hearts will miss him greatly, we find comfort knowing he rests in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, reunited with his beloved parents and brother. His memory and legacy will forever live in the hearts of those who loved him.
The family would also like to express gratitude to Dr. Jan Phillips and the healthcare team at Presbyterian Hospital, Holly Deas, Kamie Castillo, and Accent Health for their compassionate, thorough, and loving care.
Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Fairhope, AL Sunday, May 10, 2026 I am so terribly sorry for your family's loss. I know he was a amazingly wonderful man and he was so proud of his family and his two girls. I know he loved his wife dearly and I know he was also loved so much. I hate that I am so far away and cannot attend the funeral. What a truly outstanding man. I did not know him personally, but I feel like I knew him through Heather. So I know that heaven has gained a magnificent soul and he will continue to be your guardian angel. He will live on through your amazing stories and memories.
