James was born on October 27, 1950, to Dale and Clotile Jones. He leaves behind a legacy of teaching and learning, music, and unforgettable stories.
More than anything, his grandchildren were the center of his world. They filled his life with purpose, pride, and endless happiness. Nothing delighted him more than being with them, telling stories, sharing laughter, and creating moments that became cherished memories. He found his greatest joy in their presence.
''Mr. Jones'' will be remembered for his deep passion for teaching. It was a calling that shaped his life and the lives of countless students. He was a teacher through and through, and an exceptional one at that. He devoted his career to education as both an elementary classroom teacher and a fifth and sixth-grade Social Studies teacher. After retirement, he continued to work with small groups at a local elementary school. His classrooms were places where curiosity was encouraged, stories came alive, and students felt seen and inspired. Teaching was not just his profession; it was his calling, and his influence lives on in the many students whose lives he touched.
Music was another great passion of James's life. He loved all kinds of music, and his favorite band was the Grateful Dead. A walking, talking history book of rock and roll, James could hear the name of nearly any song from the 1960s through the 1990s and immediately recall the lyrics, the lead singer, and the story of where he saw the band perform. Few knew that James was even among the crowds at Woodstock…one of those familiar faces forever frozen in a moment of history.
James will be remembered for his passion for teaching, his encyclopedic love of music, and his love for his grandkids. His life was rich with curiosity, heart, and meaning, and he will be profoundly missed.
James was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bobby Jones; sister-in-law, Cathy Jones; nephew, Matthew Jones; and father-in-law, Ralph Hocutt. He is survived by his wife Jana, son Jeremy McClanahan and wife Jennifer, daughter Jenna Allgood and fiancé Jorge Vasquez; brother Bill Jones; grandchildren Jacob and Jolie McClanahan and Jackson, Jaida, and Jerrica Allgood.

Portland, TX Saturday, May 23, 2026 James was a man who lived life strongly. His time was filled loving and supporting his familyHe was also a good friend to many. He was positive, fun and helpful. My last time to visit with him briefly was this past March. I will treasure the hug he gave me as I left. Jim and I feel blessed to have known him as a co-worker and have him as a friend.
As a teacher, he was “phenomenal”; full of energy and enthusiasm. His students were happy and inspired by him. He touched many lives in positive ways.
His rewards in Heaven will be many because he lived his faith each day through his actions.

Greenville, TX Thursday, May 21, 2026 Mr. Jones was my all time favorite teacher....my brother's as well. He made every student feel special and important. I still remember his amazing and interactive projects as well as his wonderful sense of humor and kind heart.I hadn't seen him since fourth grade and then I ran into him last year. He still remembered my name and my brothers. The cool thing was that my kid was there with me. He made my child feel seen, and acted like he had known him for years. He talked to us for a good 30 minutes praising my brother and I as children to my child and telling funny stories as well as showering my child with positive praise and affirmations.
He was a wonderful teacher....the best of the best.....but an even better human. A role model and mentor for us all. He will be deeply missed
