He was born on August 9, 1946 in Durant, Oklahoma to James L. Roberts and Bobbie June Roberts. He graduated from Durant High School in 1964. He went on to attend SE Oklahoma State University and East Texas State University. He joined the National Guard and served six years. In 1966, James moved to Commerce, Texas and opened a Pizza Inn franchise, managing it until 1971. He obtained his nursing home administrators license in 1976 and went on to manage nursing homes throughout Texas. The most recent being Briarcliff Health Center from 2000 -2023.
James loved life and was the life of the party wherever he went. He was known for his story telling of jokes, his generosity and his kindness to others. His circle of friends came from all walks of life. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. James loved to travel with his wife and friends to Ruidoso, New Mexico annually to celebrate his birthday. He was a competitive golfer, golfing on numerous golf courses throughout the U.S. and bringing home many trophies. When health issues prevented him from golfing, he enjoyed playing the slot machines at casinos.
He courageously fought cancer for 5 years. James lived life fully on his own terms, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, laughter and resilience.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 32 years, Donna Mularchek Roberts, daughter, Angie Roberts Stauss, son, James Brian Roberts, grandson, Justin Garner and wife, Lalainia, great-grandson, Geronimo Garner, step-sister, Nancy Conner and husband, Randal, and his beloved kitties, Midnight and Feather.
He was preceded in death by his son, James Chad Roberts, his parents, and sister, Janie Tilford.
Memorials may be made to the City of Commerce Animal Shelter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Red Anderson, Jerry Tarrant, John K. Smith, Preston Pearson, Simon Poljakow, Larry Parker, Dr. Richard Selvaggi and Dr. Roger Khaten.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Dr. Richard Selvaggi, Dr. Roger Khaten, Dr. Scott Paulson, Jessica Greenway and the Wound Care Team at Hunt Regional Medical Center, the Staff of Briarcliff Health Center and the Care Team with Anew Hospice.
