Sylvia Ottwell
Sylvia May Sims Ottwell went to be with her Lord on Thursday, November 6, 2014. She was born on January 10, 1930 to George Edward and Bessie Parker Sims. Her family moved to west Dallas, where she met the love of her life, R. C. Ottwell. After a brief courtship they were married on August 21, 1948, beginning a loving and victorious marriage that would endure for sixty-six years.
Sylvia described herself as “just a country girl” who loved the outdoors and everything in it. She loved to farm, to care for animals, and to grow trees and flowers. Her family calls her the “animal whisperer” because of her uncanny ability to make a relationship with almost any living creature.
Her greatest joy, however, was raising her four children, and helping them to raise her ten grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
Sylvia was a Christian since her youth, and was a member of the Johnson Street Church of Christ in Greenville.
She is survived by her husband, R. C. Ottwell of Greenville, two daughters, Judy Ottwell Durrett of Mesquite and Jannie Ottwell Busby of Greenville, two sons, Jimmy Ottwell of Greenville, and R. C. Ottwell, Jr. of Greenville, two sisters, Nettie Sims Molanders and Jeanette Sims Randell, ten grandchildren, and twenty-two great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, four sisters, and her grandson Brian Busby.
Services will be at the Johnson Street Church of Christ, 3401 Johnson Street, Greenville, Texas, on Saturday, November 8, at 10:00 AM, under the direction of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home. Randy Daw will officiate, and Gary Pendergrass will lead the singing. Burial will follow at Etter Lake Cemetery near Dixon. Pallbearers will be Matt Ottwell, Eric Busby, Joe Paul Durrett, Jordan Ottwell, Wayne Wallace, and Farrell Nalls.
The family requests memorials be send to Johnson Street Church of Christ Building Fund, 3401 Johnson Street, Greenville, TX 75401.
