Roy Oran Baker

Roy Oran Baker, 86, of Greenville passed away peacefully July 28, 2015, at Briarcliff Health Center following a brief illness.

The son of Lonnie Riley and Sara Elizabeth Lowrey Baker, Roy was born May 7, 1929 near Truxno, Louisiana.

Following high school graduation at age 16, he worked as a mechanic.  He joined the U.S. Army in 1951. During the Korean War, Roy served in the Army supply service detachment in Japan.

He returned to the United States in 1953 and married Ruth Pilgreen.  With her encouragement and the support of the GI Bill, he enrolled in Louisiana Tech University to pursue his goal of becoming an electrical engineer.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Louisiana Tech University, Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Michigan, and a Master of Business Administration from University of Dallas.

Following his retirement from E-Systems, Roy remained active in the community as the AARP area representative to the state legislature and also volunteered locally with AARP tax preparations.  Roy was easily recognized for his frequent and long-time service as an early voting clerk and election judge in Greenville.

Roy was proud to be a member of Golden K and served in the community through their programs.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; daughter Bonita Malone and husband Myron of Greenville; daughter Lori Roper and husband Wayne of South Carolina; daughter Jan Baker of Irving; seven grandchildren; brother Iro Baker, and many nieces and nephews.

His funeral service will be Saturday, August 1, at 10 am at Coker Mathews Funeral Home Chapel.  Visitation is Friday, July 31, from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.  Interment will follow at Memoryland Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Louisiana Tech University Foundation (Roy Baker Scholarship), P.O. Box 3183, Ruston, LA 71272 or charity of your choice.

"My prayers are with Roy's family. I knew Roy for many years as an electrical engineer at ESystems, a neighbor and a friend. He was an outstanding engineer and a supportive co-worker. He was a wonderful person and friend, having a very kind and caring demeanor. He set an example for the rest of us. He will be terribly missed by all of his family and his friends.
