Michael Byron Baker, 57, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Feb. 24, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. He was born May 23, 1958, in Greenville, Texas, to Alfred T. Baker and Ada Dowden. He graduated from Greenville High School and pursued a career in jewelry and watch repair and gemology at Paris Junior College. His illness forced him to leave his position of 20-plus years at Texas Gold Connection for Bart and Sissy Sherer. Michael chose to donate his body to UT Southwestern for educational and research purposes. He is survived by his wife, Cheri Casto-Baker of Campbell; son Josef Baker and daughter Savannah Hesseltine and husband Blake of Greenville; daughter Crystal Banks and husband Frank of Yantis; son Kyle Ensign and wife Amanda of Elkton, Ky.; mother-in-law Melba Casto; and five grandchildren, Madison and Noah Banks, Jaxon and Kenleigh Hesseltine and Kollin Ensign. He is also survived by brothers David Baker and wife Sheri of Farmersville and Richard Baker and wife Patti of Floyd, many nieces and nephews and longtime friends. Michael loved music, cooking, guns and people. He touched many lives and a number of strangers became “honorary Bakers” and lifelong friends. His younger friends came to think of him as Uncle Mike. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home in Greenville. The funeral will be officiated by Pastor James Ralston of Shady Grove Baptist Church where Michael and his family attended.
