Gary Newton Barnes, 70, of Greenville, will be remembered and honored on
Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at Salem-Kinser UMC Church in Greenville. He passed
away on Thursday, June 12, at Settlers' Ridge Nursing Home in Celina, Texas,
after a battle with lung cancer.
Born in Lewistown, Missouri, on March 11, 1938 to Lloyd Newton Barnes and
Lois Fern Barnes, the family soon thereafter moved to Alaska. They moved to
the Denver area in Colorado after WWII started, where Gary graduated in 1956
from Englewood High School. He married Margaret Alberta Stone, also of
Denver, on June 12, 1960. The couple was celebrating their 48th wedding
anniversary on the day of Gary's death.
After a brief stint in the U.S. Army in Arlington, Virginia, Gary and
Margaret moved to Greenville in 1964. Gary worked for the company that was
then known as Temco, then E-Systems, and finally Raytheon, where he retired
in 1998. He was a professor of Computer Science at Texas A&M at Commerce
from 1972 until 2002. His hobbies included gardening, tinkering with
machinery and motors around the house, and anything to do with computers.
Known for his dry wit, endearing humor, characteristic bluntness, and
endless knowledge, Gary is survived by his wife Margaret, son and
daughter-in-law Chris and Dalene Barnes of Bryan, Texas; son and
daughter-in-law Duane and Diane Barnes of Celina, Texas; daughter and
son-in-law Sherry and Dwight Davison of Murrieta, California. Gary and
Margaret boast seven grandchildren, Bethany, Amy, and Kimberly Barnes of
Bryan; Jeremy and Jessica Barnes of Celina, and Michelle and Morgan Davison
of Murrieta, California. Gary is also survived by his two sisters, Elaine
Wicker of Denver, Colorado, and Karen Livingstone of San Diego, California.
He was preceded in death by both his parents.
