Dorothy Marie Glasscock Ray went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at the age of 96 after a brief illness. Dorothy was a life-long resident of Hunt County until moving to Houston in 2006.  She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, and a committed friend.  She will be missed by all who knew her.

Dorothy was born on March 9, 1914 in White Rock, Texas to Robert Leonard and Belva Katherine Glasscock and spent her youth in the Floyd area.  She received Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at the age of 14, and she was a role model to all as she walked in His precepts throughout her long life.

She married Guy Ray in 1931 and they established their home in Greenville.  She was a supportive wife, assisting Guy in the bookkeeping area of his farming business and encouraging him in his civic leadership positions. She and Guy were members of First Baptist Church for many years and later became charter members of Ridgecrest Baptist Church.  Dorothy served in these churches as a children’s Bible study teacher for many years.  She was an avid gardener, excellent cook and enjoyed designing clothes.

In her senior years, Dorothy was involved in the Red Hat Club and enjoyed playing bridge and exercising with her friends at the Greenville YMCA.  She continued these activities when she moved to Houston and the Terrace Independent Living Community.  At the Terrace, she was disciplined in her exercise and was recognized monthly for her perfect attendance. She also participated in the weekday Bible Study and was a faithful attendee of the Terrace Chapel.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, Robert, Auva, and Alvin Glasscock, and a sister Buena Arey.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters Carolyn Jean Hancock of Victoria and Judy Craig and husband Bob of Houston; six grandchildren, Guy Hancock and wife Jimelle and Jeffrey Hancock and wife Kimberly of Mesquite, Melanie Reed and husband Mike of Victoria, Angela Bolen and husband Troy of Austin, Kimberly Thode and husband Eric of Houston, and Ray Craig and wife Julia of Short Hills, New Jersey; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters Mary Guy, Willie Terry and Imogene Longbotham of the Houston area and numerous nieces and nephews are among her survivors also.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel

with Dr. David Stubblefield officiating. Interment will follow at Memoryland Memorial Park. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM Sunday until service time.
